The Viking has an optional Electric Power Steering (EPS) system that apparently "provides the industry's best balance of light feeling with positive feedback from the terrain." The system reads steering wheel torque, On-Command setting, vehicle speed, and negative feedback to determine exactly how much assistance is needed based on the situation.

On many vehicles I have read that systems like these don't make much of a difference to driving experience. A lot of people can't even tell a difference in steering when the system is on.

Do you think this will be the case with the Viking as well? Is this option really needed, or can I make do without it?

I have a 2012 Commander 800XT and when I purchased it I didn't think it would be a big deal not having power steering. On an atv I really could take it or leave it but after having my Commander for a year I've been in many situations/tight places that power steering would have been appreciated. I won't have one without it again. If you ride in open areas then it may be something you wouldn't need but in tight trails and rocks there is less fatigue by the end of the day.

I have a 2011 Can-Am Outlander 800 XTP, and it has Power steering, and i love it. Makes it so easy to steer over a non EPS atv. I recently sold a 2010 Fullsize Polaris Ranger 500, it did not have EPS, and never felt i needed it. So i'll say NO on getting it on this Viking.

I feel like I know how to steer, so I am not sure that I really need this technology. I have driven other ATVs that did not have this feature. I think it's is something that I won't miss.

Can anyone explain what the system actually does to the feel of driving in a particular situation?

This will be my first SxS and **** yes i'm getting the EPS. Why wouldn't you? You're already springing for the luxury of a SxS so you might as well do it right. I have my green EPS reserved and it should be on the way soon. I am STOKED!!!
that's exactly how I see it.

congrats on putting through the order for a Viking, did you dealer say how much longer till you get yours?

and how much was your deposit?

Power steering does more than just make it easier to steer. It provides the
capability of keeping control when riding along and hitting an object that wants
to force your wheel to the right of left. With PS you don't have that momentary
loss of control. Overall if anyone ever plans on putting on tracks you had better have PS.

I can guarantee that if your in a tight situation with your viking in full lock 4 wheel drive, you are definitely going to wish you had power steering, if you have a wife or girl friend that will ever drive it especially, and as posted earlier, less chance of losing control in certain conditions

I agree with the above two comments. My 12 yo sprained his wrist yesterday after having the steering wheel wrenched out of his hand, he hit a large rock at low speed. I have also had the wheel spin in tight spots when trying to maneuver, so will be getting after market PS.

The question is, which brand is best and where is the best place to buy from?

Who you bought it from?
How much was it?
How was the install?
Do you feel it was worth the $?

Somebody here posted a thread about the EPS they added. I know it cost about half the price of getting it standard on a Viking. You should be able to search for it.

I am VERY glad I spent the extra $$ for EPS

The last ride I went on with my brother in law I was very happy I had it. He was riding his Brute Force and I was in the Viking. We came up on a very blown out mud hole in a pine plantation and was going around through the pine trees. He pulled in first and yelled back that he didn't think I was going to make it. I told him to go on and that we would try it or we would have to turn around. I squeezed through all of those small pines with sometimes barely an inch of clearance on each side. When I pulled out the other side he was suprised that we had made it through the maze of small pines. I told him that if I can get the tip in the rest of it will usually go.

My neighbor has an Arctic Cat, and I know they are a completely different animal, but after driving my new SE with EPS, he commented that he wished he had power steering as it was an altogether more pleasant experience driving mine.
