Do you have a service manual? It has a list of fault codes and tells you how to find them in the display.

if i hold the key it will continue to idle and it revs up if i press the throttle, but kills when i release the key.

What does this mean, if you hold the key on start it will keep running ie starter motor still engaged or does it mean you just have your hand on the key in the on position? If it's the latter then it must be a loose wire, maybe the wire is loose where it crimps onto the spade terminal at the back of the key. You did replace the whole ignition right?

Hmmmm. So you replaced the actual ign lock cylinder? Sounds like that would be the culprit. We see them worn out all the time at work.

That is a picture of what I changed. I got my new one directly from my dealer.
I cant find my manual to get to the trouble codes but no trouble lights are illuminated on the dash.

 

Yamaha has a pdf of their manuals if you just google Yamaha Viking manual. You have to have a loose wire somewhere or a broken wire. I had a rat get in my Viking once and chewed the fuel gauge wire in half and my fuel gauge started flashing at me

 

Please let me know if this was ever resolved, I have a 2014 Yamaha Viking and I have replaced everything on it but I’m still having the same issue that you are. It will run when I have the key turned but as soon as I release the key it dies. I replaced ignition, relays, starters, batteries, fuses, etc. and I can’t figure out the problem! Somebody please help.!!

 

Try reversing the wires on the starting relay, they maybe attached wrong. Years ago I heard of relays that were labeled wrong for positive and negative and reversing the wires fixed the problem you described

 

I will definitely give that a go, that’s pretty much.. the only thing I didn’t try, because it’s wired “properly” but I guess if it’s labeled backwards… would it still fire? Having a positive to negative and vise versa?

Unfortunately… it did not, there must be a cut safety switch, or a wire bad somewhere that I just cannot locate.. because at this point I’ve feel like I went through all my options

Unfortunately no one has ever come back to share what they may have done to get this resolved. What have you tried? Have you tried any of the things mentioned above?
