I know on my pickup when the temps drop too seriously I put the pedal to the floor and crank a few times to help circulate the oil, let off and she'll fire right up. Really does away with many of the morning sickness symptoms.
I keep the thing in my well insulated basement garage. Air temp is in the mid 50's or warmer in the garage. Sounds like a dry, sloppy starter pinion shaft with the pinion chattering on the shaft as it free wheels back into place after starting. We'll see how it goes.
