EDIT SEE PICS TO COMPARE BELOW
Heads up on something I encountered today. Time for my first oil change and I go to my local dealer for an oil filter and oil. They tell me that the rhino 700 and the Viking 700 uses same oil filter and engine oil. Well, the engine oil may be correct 10w-40 Yamalube. Ok well, I get home and find that the oil filter on my Viking is 5gh-13440-50, part number from the rhino filter is 5gh-13440-20. They are the same size and thread type but the guts are made differently. I also go to Yamahamotorsports.com and check their parts catalog online and find that the 5gh-13440-50 is also the same filter they are calling for on the Viking. Can anyone shed some light on this? Anyone change their oil yet?

The 20 filter probably supercedes out to the 50. Yamaha made a revision to filter, for what reason? The Viking oiling system is likely the same as the 700 Rhino... so using it probably shouldn't be a concern.

Yep the filter is the -50. I had my dealer throw in an oil change with the deal because I was not driving back to Michigan for them to do it. They had to order them bc they didn't have any. It took them 4 weeks to get one in. Def was gettin a little irritated waiting that long for a dang filter. But I got it mailed to me and I changed it couple weeks ago and all good now.

Is the oil change on the Viking as easy as they stated in the ads for it? Everything easy to get to?

After my initial 20 hour break in I used a 5gh-13440-20 because I had 5 of them sitting on my shelf because its used in pretty much every machine Yamaha has with an automotive type filter. I think they are just getting another supplier to make the filters for them(maybe a cost savings thing). I can't see it being harmful to your engine because Yamaha has used the 5gh-13440-20 for years and before that they used 5gh-13440-10 and before that it was 5gh-13440-00. If the filter was good enough for my YZF-R1 which makes 180Hp I think it can protect my 47hp 686cc Viking engine. That's just my 2-cents.

I believe Sierra would be the cross reference filter. I use them on my Yamaha F225 outboard, and my two four stroke waverunners.
