Hello,

I am new here but have been lurking for a little bit! I am looking at buying a new 2023 Yanmar Longhorn. I plan to use it around the house but also on trail rides with friends. Can anyone give a reason as to why I should not get this? I have heard that it is under powered like the IV but has that ever caused anyone issues on the trail?

Thank you!

Like the III you mean? The Vikings could do with a little more power but it's not really an issue, I only notice a slight lack pushing hard on fast forest trails or at top speed on the highway. I definitely wouldn't say they are under-powered.

As for reasons not to get A Yanmar I can only think of one, re-sale under the Yanmar badge might not be as high as a Yamaha branded machine. Other than that they are the same machine with Yanmar adding a couple of extras, the peeps on here that own them will tell you more.

I can’t tjink of any issues as to why not, I love my Viking. And it has plenty of power just not seat of the pants whip your head back acceleration. And there are lots of mods & accessories for customizing it.
Around the house as a utility sxs you will like it better than a Wolverine but on the trails you would like the Wolverine better. Just depends on which you would do the most of.
And ditto to what Cactus said.

What's the top speed on the Viking? Just out of curiosity. Road riding around here is 35 mph limit.

Worn belt can take a few mph off the top end speed. JBS clutch gets mine to 55mph with a new belt. Cheers

I've hit 60. Took a minute to get there. 50 is the norm

@Rockybgrant - So I own a 2018 Yanmar Longhorn. I absolutely love it. However, when I first bought it during Covid any SxS was hard to come by with low miles and kept up nicely at a good price point. I bought my Yanmar that was previously owned by a commercial construction company but sold through a commercial equipment dealer in Sacramento CA. They kept it up great and I bought it sight unseen. Just pics. Well, I was super bummed to say the least when I found out they (Yanmar) made a commercial vehicle for job sites with a 25mph limiter and an annoying reverse beeper. Well, it wasn't until I joined this site and @Blue Bull was the ONLY one on the web that had the solution. There is a software download that solved the 25mph limiter issue after a free software download (you will need a Microsoft based computer not a Mac) , as a matter of fact I even could have increased HP and tuned it like a race car.

I decided to keep the stock setting and got rid of the 25mph limiter. I have got mine over 50mph as I don't think there is any governor on there anymore (it's all electronic). But I don't think you will have that issue if it is a recreational version bought new. One bonus was actually the back up beeper. It was already wired in when going in reverse, so all I did was use the same mount for a killer LED back up light and got rid of the annoying beeper. Other than that, they are pretty much identical to the Yamaha Viking 6. One other issue I ran into with the Yanmar was getting a local Yamaha dealer to work on it. No Yanmar dealers near me. It took a little bit to show the tecs the Yamaha motor etc. (Yanmar just a rebranded Yamaha).. Once they realized it was pretty much identical except for my cammo Yanmar wrap and different seat pattern, the Yamaha dealer took it in and have no issues since with parts, labor, etc.

The aftermarket winches, lights, bed liner, almost everything is interchangeable with Yamaha. So, like @cactus mentioned, unless you are worried about slight resale value depreciation due to not many people knowing the brand vs. Yamaha, then I highly recommend the Yanmar Longhorn. We love it, fits the dog, guests for ranch rides, going downtown on the roads for gardening supplies (street legal in Idaho) and basically best gas milage ever, it does almost anything a small truck will. Plows in the winter, pushes snow no problem and I switch out radial tires when no snow on the ground for better handling and summer driving. Not too many people I know take these over 40mph. If you want a dune jumper or something a UTV is wrong vehicle for you, opt for a Can-Am or something, but plan on spending 5x more easy.

I purchased my 2022 yanmar longhorn, in later fall (October). I put 300 miles on it in a little over a month. Mostly used it for bird hunting and getting to bird hunting spots. The ride is great because of the wheel base, it’s comfortable, plenty of room for all the hunting gear and people. After I fixed the breaks from squeaking from guys on here it was perfect. I road trails at 20-35 mph so it’s perfect for me. I don’t think it’s under powered at all. The more that time went on (getting closer to winter) the better the dealers price got. I added hard roof and window which are well worth it!
