Did Yamaha fix middle gear issue?

Just curious, I have no symptoms (knock on wood) of middle gear issues, but did Yamaha resolve this on newer models? I have a 2018 VI and was reading through some old middle gear threads. Made me wonder.

Yeah good question, I've heard some say they use Loctite now and others say nothing was done. It would be interesting to know though for sure.
And if nothing has been done to improve this why do some fail and some don’t? I’m assuming the majority don’t.

the mechanic at my dealer told me that plowing snow was hard on the middle gear if the machine wasnt completely stopped when going from forward to reverse.i see some oil leaking from my engine again am hoping my case isnt leaking after having it was rebuilt..
I was hoping it was a for sure fix at the factory now, but maybe it isn’t. Hopefully they used oem gasket sealer or gasket when it was rebuild. Possible some old material was left on the mating faces of the case and never sealed correctly.

yes not sure .but has been good for over a year,i am trying to narrow it down but once again swearing at welded skid plates making it almost impossable to see anything on the bottom of engine.

i am convinced that that case is leaking and not sure what i'm going to do with machine, either sell it for parts or try and find another viking with a good engine..it is dissapointing after getting the engine rebuilt.
How fast is it leaking? Is it going down on the dipstick?
How many miles are on you machine now?

How much would it cost to strip it down now and fix it before it goes too far? And can they put some sort of tab on the bolts to stop them from coming undone?
Just looking at the manual it says to use Loctite on all of the middle gear nuts and bolts, so that would obviously mean it is done at the factory. So following on that would mean that if your middle gear failed from the factory then it would fail again on a rebuild without doing something different.

The majority never fail, what Trailcutter says makes sense though, plowing would be hard work especially with all of the backwards and forwards, compared to just riding around for example.
I used mine for a couple years moving snow. I’ve since got a kubota tractor with a snow blower. Just hoping I don’t have one of these failures.
i have a bit over 22,0000 km on machine, about 2,500 km on rebuiild.it isn't leaking much until i get it warm.it seams to sound and run okay.i'm thinking i am going to take the rear skid plate off with a zip saw so i can see what's going on .

i just feel like its like putting money into a dead horse.
I would keep running it and adding oil as needed.
if you cut the skid plate off maybe you can fabricate a way to reattach it so it is also removable anytime.

Yeah but if the middle gear is loose it will eventually fail and most likely crack the case.

Yes but my thoughts were since he had it rebuilt not that long ago maybe it’s just a bad gasket causing the leak. If he gets the skid plate cut off he can make a better assessment.

I see now, and with the plate off he can try and re-torque the case bolts too.

well not having much luck taking the skid plate off as they welded it from the top side also, might have to try cutting it into pieces to get it out as they must have welded everything before they put in the engine and diffs.
