My new 2021 yamaha Viking side by side 700. Has water in the clutch box. Never ever went through any water what so ever. How did the water get in there. We have had a lot of wind and rain, could the water have gotten in there some way. At wits end

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on the new Viking, I haven’t seen any 2022’s yet. Was your Viking sitting outside during the wind and rain? If so I guess it is possible that it got in through the air intake for the belt and clutch. There is a air in and a air out to keep it cool. Condensation might be another possibility. How much water are you talking about. Do you know about the drain plug?

Hi and welcome to the forum! Can you explain a little more about what you mean by the clutch box?

Dealer said about 650 ml of water. Almost a quart of water. The bike would start to move but would then just roar when u would gave it gas. Wasn't expecting a water issue as it has never been driven in water. If water can enter that easily it not much good to anyone. This was the second time it acted up like that. It's a 2021 not a 2022 as I stated. I took delivery in February of this year. Sorry for the mix up. The first time the bike acted up I parked it for an hour or so and when I started it up again it was fine. I use it for two weekends, parked it for two weeks and then this issue. We had a big wind and rain storm in the two weeks it was parked. I bought it for a piece of mind and now I'm not sure if I did the right thing by buying yamaha. I have always had good luck with any yamaha purchase. Gotta wait for a belt to be flown in before they take it apart . Will this hurt the clutching system as there is no warranty on the clutches what so ever. That's another issue, new bike, no warranty on certain parts, go figure. They are going to make me a scapegoat I guess.

This is not normal. Never heard of it. How did the dealer think the water got in there, the storm? Most likely. I cross a river with mine all the time and never had that. If your going to keep it outside keep it covered.

There is only a 6 month warranty on the Viking but a 10 year warranty on the belt. Water should not have destroyed the belt. So why is the belt bad and is dealer covering the belt under the belt warranty?

I have been on this forum for 7 1/2 years and have read every post. I have never heard of this problem either. I have driven through rivers and mud that came up to the steering wheel and did not get any water in there. My Viking has been outside for over 7 years in every conceivable weather including Noreasters and Hurricanes without any problems. I can only think of two possibilities: Either someone is messing with you on purpose or one of the air ducts that connect to the crank case cover over the clutch is missing pieces or is not connected properly.

Rick what was the mileage when you picked it up? Did someone take it for a joy ride in a lake before you bought it?

Picked it up in feb. no mileage. Sent the dealer some pics the last of may With sticker decal issuea(peeling and splitting). The mileage read 3 Kim's. The first ride in bike was in July. Had it fully serviced around 900 Klms. No issues with water up until shortly the service. The bike was out in the rain from April up until the first service and no issues. After parked for two weeks I got ready to go to the cabin and it was slipping. Parked it for an hour or so and started it up and it worked perfect for another two weeks. Parked again for two weeks and when I started it up this time it would only barely move. Give it gas and nothing. The bike has never been driven in water, no even a quarter of an inch. Go figure. We have had lots of wind and rain, was wondering if it can enter some how, I'm at my wits end here. No faith in the bike anymore

Take some pictures of the whole belt housing area and post them here. I wonder if the dealer didn’t get something back together properly when they did the first service because that’s when your issues started.

Talked to the dealer and they said they would not have had to touch anything down there to do the service

Ok well I agree with BadMonkey that something is not assembled right in that area. Or something came loose, that’s why I suggested some pictures

Maybe it changed but the 2014 first service includes a belt inspection which means the snorkels are disconnected and the clutch housing is removed, then the belt comes off.

In this diagram, only part numbers 29 and 35 have openings. Everything else should be closed up and water tight. The only place water can enter is one or both of those openings. Part number 35 is well protected under the bed into a cross brace. Part number 29 is protected by a cover behind the driver's seat. Is that cover in place? Part number 3 in this diagram.

Thanks, I can't check this out as the dealer still has the bike in the shop and is waiting for a new belt to come in before they take it apart to clean it up inside(clutch, etc). The bike has never been driven rough or abused. I bought it to replace my truck going back and forth to the cabin.

another question, do they have to ruin the belt when they take it apart to clean up the insides
