12 inch ITP wheels...center caps to shallow.

Just a heads up...

For those of you thinking about buying the 12" ITP wheels...you might want to wait just a bit. I had read that some of you had problems with the center caps being too shallow on some of the other brands. So before I purchased mine (ITP SS 212's - 12"), I made several phone calls, and voiced my concern over that very issue...and was assured that they had actually tried their wheels on the Viking to make sure.

Went to put the new tires and wheels on and, you guessed it, the caps will not go on. After many conversations with ITP it seems as though -- either they only tested the 14' wheels and assumed that the 12' would fit as well. Or, there are some deeper caps out there that the California office doesn't know about. They are telling me that the caps for the 12' and 14's are identical. They are also telling me that they make only one cap size.

So I have some nice shiny new wheels mounted on some cool looking tires ,and here I sit. First the rear window, now the wheels...gotta get this monkey off my back!

If anyone out there has ITP 12" wheels ( not steel) on their Viking...please let me know. I would really like to have the part number from inside the cap.

For anyone out there that has the 14" ITP's can you please pull one off and check the part number as well. The number on my caps is P110SS and another number S905-16 (they are chrome) , please let me know if that's the same as what you have.

Thanks...Stay tuned.

Vikingss212 has some itp ss wheels on his
Mass n trash. I just last week installed the 12" ITP SS 108 rims and had no problems with the center caps. Unfortunately I am out of town and can't help you with the cap number. It could also be a difference in the 108 versus the 212 rim dimensions

THANKS so much for the info. That is really weird, because all of the 12" wheels are supposed to be the same thickness???? I'm going to pass that on because they had resigned themselves into thinking it was a 12 inch vs 14 inch thing. This whole thing is quite a head scratcher. On one hand, they are telling me that they absolutely should work. On the other hand they're acknowledging that they don't. I'm just hoping that there are some different caps out there somewhere.

Anyone else out there have 12" ITP's??? If so...can you give me the part number inside cap.

Vikingss212...if you get a chance, could you please check the inside of one of your caps. Or, anyone else with 14" ITP's? I need the part number.

Thanks!
ITP Delta 12" wheels were no problem, I was even able to use the factory lugs with them

Thank for the info. Correct me if I'm wrong...but aren't those the steel wheels? Do the caps on those snap on the outside...or do they go on first and come through the wheel?
Yes they are steel, I didn't see you specified aluminum until after I posted. And they do go on first and through the wheel

I was going to ask the same question because there isn't anything that sticks out for the center caps to be to shallow

Yep, the original cap is off. Just wanted to see how far off the new caps were, and I have to put 3 washers over the studs first to get them to work. As it is now, once I put the wheel on, the axle hits the inside of the cap and they wont snap on. I reversed the process and put the cap on the wheel first and then set it on the studs. Then, when I push the wheel onto the hub, the axle pops the cap off. If they were about 3/8ish inches deeper, they would be fine.

Vikingss212 has 14" wheels and checked the part number on his cap...it's the same as mine. Narrowsboy has indicated he has 12" wheels and his caps work fine...but he has a different model wheel.

Narrowsboy is out of town, so I'm still looking for anyone with 12" alloy ITP's....I want to check the part number on your caps. I'm HOPING it's a different number. If not, it looks as though the problem is with these specific wheels.

I'm Baffled
Ive got the STI HD2 wheels, and I had no problem with the center caps, on the other hand, others did, if i remember right, i left the rubber cab on, and the cap still fit over iit.
Yep. you're correct. I have confirmed that STI wheels do have a specific cap for the Viking. The cap code is: CAP VIKE GB

Here are some photos that better explain what the issue is.
My cap measures approx. 1 5/16” to 1 3/8” deep inside from the lip, not the tabs. With the wheel mounted, the axle sticks out approx. 1 1/2” to 1 9/16” from the center hub of the wheel. I’m eyeballing this with a tape measure, but I would say an additional 1/4" might do it…. “maybe” even as little as 3/16ths? If I put 3 washers on the studs first, the caps fit. Together, the washers are approx. 1/4 inch + thick.

Okay. I am home and was able to get those center cap measurements on the ITP SS108. First off the cap part number is P110SS. With the caps in the rims I measured from the surface the wheel contacts the wheel hub to the center of the cap using calipers. I get 2.330". Measuring with the same straight edge from the end of the axle to the wheel hub I get 2.320". Needless to say there is only 0.010" clearance. Inside each cap is a mold riser. I was so concerned on how tight of a fit it was I used a small pencil grinder and smoothed that high spot down on all 4 caps. I can sleep a bit better knowing the cap won't touch, but it is close. In the morning I wheel re-torque the lug nuts as per the manual to 54ft/lbs. Hope this helps you out with your wheels

THANKS for the measurements! I've been going back and forth with ITP on this, and they have finally acknowledged that my caps will not work. Last time I spoke with them, they were planning on getting a Viking in so they could try ALL of their wheel to see which ones don't work. ITP is indicating that the fix for this will probably be deeper caps. I'm fine with that as long is it doesn't take months.

As of now, I have sent an e-mail requesting that they put in writing their plans on resolving this. I don't want to be stuck with wheels without caps and, if I have to return these...I don't want to be stuck with the cost of dismounting these and then having to pay to have some new ones mounted up.

M-N-T
FYI: At no cost to me, the place I bought my wheels sent me some black STI caps for now...which fit perfect on the ITP wheels, and actually look great. ITP has informed me that they are working on new deeper center caps and will send them when they get them. So for now, if you are buying 12" ITP wheels, just know that the caps may be too shallow.

On a side note, this has been a bit of an adventure...but the customer service has been stellar!
So what was the part number of the new caps you got? The used ITP rims I bought are too shallow as well and I want to get the right ones ordered before the mud is ready to fly.

I don't have a part number, but your supplier should be able to get these. Mine are actually "STI" HD caps...and they are deeper and made for the Vikings. Mine are black, but I think they come in chrome as well? I really think the STI HD caps look better than the ITP caps anyways.

Send me a PM if you don't have any luck with the place you bought yours and I will contact the pace I got mine and get you a number.
Will do. Thanks Mass. I'll let ya know.
