Dipstick blown.

So I went ice fishing this past weekend in -25 wind chill with the Viking. After replacing the fuel pump relay from an earlier trip in minus weather and having it leave me stranded it started no problem with the solid state relay. But today I was pushing snow and noticed an oil smell. I got out and noticed oil on the ground. I cut the engine and lifted the box to see no dipstick. Got it inside and took the filter out. Noticed the drain on the bottom was iced up but didn’t think that could do it. Was wondering if anyone has had this problem or had any luck with Yamaha servicing their machine after this has happened. I don’t have yes warranty but I feel like this is something the company should address. I will post pics of what I found. Also there looked to be oil getting sucked in the box also. Any help is much appreciated.

There were a lot of earlier posts about this, B767Driver (Canada) in particular had this problem in the cold. From memory it was something to do with the line from the crankcase into the inlet manifold icing up, which then pressurised the crankcase popping the dipstick. Some people on a ride didn't pick up that the dipstick had popped and subsequently blew their motors when they eventually ran out of oil. There was an easy fix if you do a search you should find it if you can't let me know and I'll if I can. It was about 5 years back I think.

I never found the fix just cases of it happening. I haven’t drained the oil to see if there was any left. I sure hope there is. Spendy fix I’m guessing. Thanks for your help.

Yeah it's basically a full rebuild of course, if it ran out of oil. The fix was to put a slit in the crankcase breather, from memory, I think the breather was icing up where it entered the air box, the slit closer to the engine where the tube is always hot allowed the normal crankcase pressure to get out if the tube iced up again. The slit was maybe a couple of centimeters long in line with the tube. I think I'd be strapping the dipstick in as well. Some others should know more.

Ok. I did find a video of what you were explaining with the slit on the hose. I got the heater on it and thawed out the Viking this evening. I just checked the oil and it was still showing a ways up on the dipstick so I think I caught it in time without hurting the engine. Fingers crossed the little hose slit will work. I have an oil change kit on the way.

Everything I was explaining was from memory, and thanks to BadMonkey my memory's not so good anymore. Double check first, or PM one of the earlier guys with the problem, they might still be around.

Some of the guys were putting a slit in the hose and i saw a few put a "T" in the line and run a vent hose up to a small filter,I don't really have that kind of cold but i made a tether cable and hook it to the dipstick thought it might blow the hose off instead of the stick.

The reason I joined Viking Forum is to mention this same issue.
2014 Yamaha Viking 700 EPS minus 13 F on frozen lake. Dipstick came out with such force it created a hole next to gas cap. Not even a direct shot.
Extended Viking Warranty expired 6 months ago. Viking customer service would not accept any responsibility for this issue. Since it is has never had a recall on crankcase breather tube freezing. Mine has been in shop for 3 weeks rebuilding the motor.
Yamaha Customer service had no recommendation for repair of breather tube nor admitted any changes between the 2014 - 2015.
I know one thing if I knew this issue existed I never would have purchased a Viking. Living in South Dakota Cold is a way of life.
Good Luck to you

Yeah I feel the same way. Great machine otherwise but this is a small but big flaw. I put a slit in my hose and I hope it doesn’t happen again. Too bad your engine got ruined.
