Blown engine twice. Rant

Hi everyone, this is my first post here but Iíve been lurking around for quite awhile. I have a 2017 Yamaha Viking with 56 hours and 350 miles on it, and two years in a row the engine has blown up.

The first time it blew up was last year around the end of May - early June. I rode it for about 3 miles, shut it off and it wouldnít start again. Dealer said it had 0 compression, timing chain came off and a couple other things that I canít seem to remember. The engine was rebuilt under warranty after having to nag and argue for 4 months.

Now it has blown up just last week after the same 3 mile ride and it hasnít even been a whole year since it was rebuilt. I hauled it to my dealer last Wednesday and called the dealer today and they told me they did a pressure test, put 90 psi of air to it and somehow thereís air getting into the crank case and they have to do a top end rebuild.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I donít beat the crap out of it so this has me confused. Iím bummed out because I like the Viking, plus because of how much I paid for it, it shouldnít be breaking down like this. It will be fixed under warranty again but Iím not sure I can trust it a third time.

Sorry for the rant!

Wow sorry to hear that, that's some bad luck for sure. For my 2 cents if the timing chain had come off on the first blow up that early on it would definitely be a warranty repair. The piston would have hit and bent a valve so that's why 0 compression. As for the 2nd blow up I would be thinking that something failed from the first rebuild, it would unlikely to have got a hole in the piston or cracked rings unless it was cooked or something wasn't put together right. Good luck with it and keep us posted, and no these things are usually pretty good, a few middle gear failures and the odd head gasket but otherwise they are very reliable.

Wow. Terrible luck. I think I have something like 750 hours without a problem so far. I'm sure Cactus is right and the second failure is tied to the first. You'd think it was cheaper to just give you a new motor.

Maybe you should not go that same 3 miles again.

No updates on it yet and I asked the dealer the first time about a new motor but they said the warranty doesnít cover replacing motors, just rebuilding them. It would take less time swapping the engines instead of rebuilding it.

It's only the top end that needs rebuilding bottom end should be fine. Top end is easy and cheap to rebuild.

Hi Buck, you definitely have had a bad run with your Viking, Iím just thinking seeing as you have had 2 failures with this engine you should definitely insist on Yamaha extending your warranty by at least an extra year otherwise if this same engine fails again you could end up having to repair or replace it out of warranty, Iím certain that there is a problem with your particular engine because these engines have an excellent reputation for reliability, I myself have a 16 Viking and 3 Grizzlyís one of which has done over 100,000ks and none have ever had the engine touched and I couldnít say that about any other brand ATV's Iíve owned.
Hopefully you end up with this sorted because itís no fun at all having an unreliable machine 👍🏻

If you decide to scrap it, DM me, I'm interested in your grab bar and glove box.
