Exhaust Manifold Gasket Replacement

Hey ya'll...new guy here.

I recently bought a used 2015 Viking VI and I've been going through it to see what needs some attention. I had it running in the shop last week and after about 5-10 minutes of idling, I noticed what smelled like burning oil & then saw it smoking from the manifold.

I assumed the gasket was shot so I ordered a new one which showed up yesterday. I was looking to tackle this job this weekend & was wondering if there are any tricks or things to look out for to make my life a little easier? I ran a search but nothing popped up.

Are you sure that the gasket is shot? I'm thinking that if it was idling for 10 minutes then the exhaust would have got a lot hotter than normal and would be smelling and smoking just because it was burning off extra carbon. The header pipes on these are very thin and actually glow in the dark they get so hot. Check and see if there is a line of black carbon on the head near the gasket (a sign of manifold gasket leaking) and you should be able to hear it leaking too.

I think you might be right. I looked at it a little closer & there's definitely oil dripping onto the exhaust header (see pic). I've searched the interwebz for a valve cover gasket but I'm coming up empty. Am I looking for a top end gasket kit (O-Ring INCL. IN TOP END GASKET KIT Part #93210-96601-00 )?
